There is compelling evidence that the science of nutrition offers humanity a way to achieve a better quality of life. Nutrition provides ways not only of treating but preventing illness, whether derived from genetic or environmental sources. In view of this, a Center for Human Nutrition was established at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center through the creation of an endowment fund for UT Southwestern to use in developing a program to "place the entire field of nutrition on a firm scientific foundation."
3. Columbia University: College of Physicians and Surgeons, Nutrition Curriculum
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University was one of eight medical schools nationally to receive funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Program "Preparing physicians for the future. A Program in Medical Education." 8. Nutritional Curriculum Guide for Training Physicians
Background and Introduction: In recognition of the need to develop and enhance undergraduate and graduate medical nutrition education, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) established the Nutrition Academic Award (NAA) Program in 1997 (www.nhlbi.nih.gov/funding/training/naa). The NAA Program provided 21 U.S. medical schools with five-year grants to support nutrition education programs for medical students, medical residents, and clinical faculty (Appendix). This Nutrition Curriculum Guide for Training Physicians represents the efforts of medical nutrition educators at these schools.
9. Tufts University Nutrition Academic Award
In Year One, Tufts University School of Medicine has a 27-hour required course, Nutrition and Medicine, which has been given since 1991. In Year Two, Principles of Clinical Medicine gives students an opportunity to conduct nutrition evaluations of nursing home patients. In addition, nutrition assessment is integrated into the Interviewing (Year One) and Physical Diagnosis (Year Two) courses. 10. University of Alabama at Birmingham Nutrition Academic Award
Modifying a patients nutrition is cost effective for the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) but underutilized by physicians due to their lack of skills in counseling patients to change adverse lifestyles. For the Nutrition Academic Award (NAA) at UAB, our first aim is to develop, implement and evaluate a multidisciplinary curriculum in nutrition and prevention of CVD. This curriculum will focus on the training and application of skills for diet and activity counseling by a sequence of learning activities: 1) emphasis on the importance of nutrition for personal and patient health promotion and disease prevention, 2) demonstration of enjoyable, heart healthy meals prior to starting classes, 3) meaningful experience with practical recipe modification and addressing patient-derived, CVD nutrition questions in the freshman nutrition course, 4) skills training in diet and activity counseling in the sophomore year, 5) application of these counseling skills in family medicine (FM) offices in their junior year and 6) advanced skills training in applied CVD prevention in a senior elective.
11. University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Nutrition Academic Award Program
The specific aim of the NAA for the UCHSC is to develop and implement an integrated curriculum into medical training that will enhance both the knowledge and the clinical skills of medical students, residents, and practicing physicians to apply nutrition principles in their routine clinical practice. This will be accomplished through a multi-faceted educational intervention program that: 1) is vertically structured to best address the needs and skills of different learners, from first through fourth year medical students, residents, and practicing physicians. 2) incorporates the principles of adult learning at all levels. The interventions will be incorporated into the core curriculum of the medical school and of primary care residencies, and will address the practice of clinical nutrition, with particular emphasis on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and associated conditions. The program will be implemented under the leadership of a physician nutrition specialist, Nancy F. Krebs, who has broad experience in nutrition education of medical students, residents, and other health care trainees.
